There is something magical about the reflection of light. Sunlight changes the color of everything it bathes. There are golden oranges at sundown and softer yellows in morning light. Bright midday sun sparkles on water and makes colors vibrant. Then there is the soft warmth of lamplight hitting a table. And who doesn't love the glow of candles at a Christmas eve service? We are especially surrounded by beautiful, sparkling light this time of year. I worked in a gallery for several years and was able to witness firsthand the variety of tastes in art, but there was one thing universally appealing to everyone that walked in the gallery's door - paintings that captured the effects of light. Even if the subject matter wasn't appealing to the viewers, they would always pause and look. Capturing the effect of light in a painting is challenging. The Impressionists painted the same subject repeatedly, studying how light changed their subjects at different times of day and in different weather conditions. Claude Monet painted the same cathedral thirty times and the same field of haystacks twenty-five times, from early morning mist to the lasts rays of the setting sun. We all seek light in some way. Maybe it is the warm rays of the sun or in a cozy corner of our house. Light is referred to as a part of spirituality in all world religions. Light can be fleeting and elusive. Said Claude Monet, "You'll understand I'm sure that I'm chasing the merest sliver of color. It's my own fault. I want to grasp the intangible. It's terrible how light runs out. Color, any color, lasts a second, maybe three or four minutes at most. "
I am signing off until 2013. Thank you for reading this blog. Some of you I know, some of you I will never meet, but I appreciate each of you. I wish you all a holiday season and 2013 filled with love, laughter, and light.
