Repetition is an element of good design in paintings, architecture, and interior design.  Like our own daily routines, repetition makes us comfortable.  But breaking up the routine and repeated elements can make everything more interesting.  Lots of neutrals can be interrupted by a pop of color.  Symmetry can be broken by organic lines.  Mostly dark areas can show a little light.  I was in Savannah for a few days last week.  Savannah has great public squares every few blocks laid out in a gridded pattern.  Breaking up these backdrops are large live oak trees.  Their curving limbs, heavy with spanish moss, reach over symmetrical bricked walkways.  People and pets lounge on perfectly placed benches.  Surrounding buildings cast interesting shadows on the greenery and walkways of the squares.  All of which makes one want to just sit and take it all in.
