Have you ever thought about the complexity of a rose? All those petals are layered to unfold perfectly, with their velvety texture, soft scent, and glorious colors. What about a calla lily with its sleek sculptural white? Or the patterns and shapes of exotic orchids? There are so many types of flowers all over the earth, like a bag of gemstones God threw up in the air to gently scatter. Check out two of my floral favorites: the floral photography of Robert Mapplethorpe and the still life paintings of Nancy Hoerter. I have painted some flowers over the years, but is has been awhile. However, today I decided to do a small study of a beautiful hibiscus flower blooming in a pot on our front porch before they disappear for the season. We have two hibiscus plants that have survived three winters being dragged in and out as weather dictated. The hibiscus flower blooms quickly, only lasting around 24 hours before falling to the ground. They are also apparently tasty, or so our dog thinks as she chomps down on the fallen blooms. Take a moment today to check out a flower, either in your yard, from the links above, or even in the floral section of a store. Find your favorite. You'll enjoy the respite.
