I just returned from a five hour Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED training and certification class. Several years ago, near the close of another year, our family started talking about resolutions. My husband came up with the idea that we should each write down a few, post them on a bulletin board, and then see how we all did at the end of the year. One of mine for 2012 was to "follow through with good intentions" - those things I mean to do, but aren't urgent or never really make it to the top of my "to do" list. For years, I've thought it would be good to take a CPR class. A friend of mine mentioned that she was going to one. I signed up too. Finally. Another resolution for this past year was "to paint as much as possible." I know that goal isn't very defined, such as "paint 5 hours a day", but I think I've painted more than if I didn't have those words visibly posted. Why try to paint as much as possible? That is how I improve and produce works for shows and galleries. Plus of course, I enjoy it. If I go a stretch of time without painting, I get rusty, and if I only paint when I have deadlines, such as a commission or show, I don't build up inventory. Our kids write resolutions too. A couple years ago, one of our son's resolutions was to "get to the next level of Mario Kart (a video game). Hmmm... interesting goal. (We let that one slide, since his other resolutions were actually good.) It is getting near the end of the year. What can you resolve? Think of a few simple things and try writing them down.
